What Is It We’re Not Seeing?

GARGOYLE

[gahr-goil]
noun
1. a grotesquely carved figure of a human or animal.

There is a lot going on in the world.  In the midst of all the turmoil and the barrage of information from entertainment, I can’t help but think that we’re missing something.

Something is happening and I’m not just talking about the discovery of water on Mars.  That doesn’t really surprise anyone.  No, there’s something else.  Perhaps something that is just there in the background, but, you can’t quite put your finger on it…yet somehow it ties into everything.  As I looked around on the subway at the other passengers, I could see it.  As I walked off the train and made my way above ground it was there too.  When I was inside the building I had to go into, I could clearly see it there in front of me.

It took the form of a huge TV screen in the office and it had absolutely no sound coming from it.  Now you may say, no big deal, I’ve been to plenty of places where there are screens and no sound…like the mall for example.  To that I would say, yes, you’re right.  There’s no sound coming from those screens, but I would ask, why are there television screens everywhere even when you can’t hear them?  That’s when you realize it…it’s a distraction.

If you had a television in your home without sound you would probably throw it out.  But here in this  office in Manhattan, New York, there it was another soundless TV screen.  It’s the 1000 pound gorilla in the room.  We are always being distracted by something.  Whether it’s music, television, our employment or anything to just simply keep us busy.  The question is why?  What is it that we’re not supposed to take the time to see or for that matter figure out?  When was the last time that most of us caught up in the rat race were able to sit back and really think “Why am I doing this?  This can’t be why I was put on this Earth…to go to school, then get a job, then retire and then die.  Oh yeah and somewhere in there maybe get married and have a child and squeeze out something that can be considered a life.”

Also you can only have children if you can afford them, so you’d better have a good job or society will deem you unfit and therefore you shouldn’t be allowed to have any.  However, I’m getting off the subject and maybe that leads right back to my point.  Distraction.  What are we really supposed to be thinking about if there were no such things as jobs and money?  What if we were just on a island with all the food we needed growing wild on its own and we had our own home for shelter?  What’s our purpose in life then?  What are we not seeing?  Maybe someone out there knows the answer, because there has to be more to life than this.

Up next week Monday, The Gargoyle.

  1. Very interesting thoughts you brought up here. We are social beings and I think that even if we didn’t have all the technology, our thoughts would be around each other and how we can help one another and improve ourselves for them and our own self-actualization. Or maybe that’s just an ideal world?
